The 2026 El Niño that is strengthening in the Pacific Ocean is on track to be the largest one in the last 150 years, researchers said. El Niño could combine with climate change to raise global average temperatures in 2027, which could make next year the hottest on record, researchers added. The last El Niño took place in 2023–24.
