A preliminary earthquake of 2.6 magnitude struck Tuesday morning just south of Gilroy, according to the United States Geological Survey. The quake, centered about 4 miles south-southwest of Gilroy, hit at 8:39 am, the USGS said. It was 12.1 miles southeast of Morgan Hill, and 9 miles northeast of Watsonville.
