5,000 aftershocks hit Japan after 2011 earthquake

Japan was hit by nearly 5,000 aftershocks after a 9-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of the northeastern region of Tohoku on March 11, 2011. The quake triggered a tsunami, with both the disasters claiming more than 16,000 lives and leaving 2,000 others missing. The disaster also led to the nuclear meltdown at the Fukushima power plant.
