53 students died across IITs in 5 years, over half were from SC/ST/OBC: Report

At least 53 students died across IITs between 2020-21 and 2024-25, according to data accessed by HT. Of these, 45 deaths were recorded as suicides, while eight were classified as unnatural deaths. Notably, more than half the students who died belonged to the SC, ST or OBC categories. This comes after second-year IIT Bombay student Sahil Wakode died by suicide.
