Calling Rana the "key conspirator behind the 2008 mayhem", NIA said, "Extradition finally came through after Rana exhausted all legal avenues." US' Supreme Court had recently denied Rana's plea against extradition.

Tahawwur was reportedly brought to India on a special flight that landed at Palam airbase. The 64-year-old was caught in US in 2009 and India sought his extradition for trial for attack which killed over 160 people.

The Delhi Police Special Cell has been placed on high alert and SWAT commandos have been deployed for the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack accused Tahawwur Rana's arrival. A bulletproof vehicle, accompanied by armoured vehicles, will reportedly transport him. Restrictions were also imposed on public transportation near NIA office and gate number 2 of the JLN Stadium metro station was shut.
