6.9-magnitude earthquake hits western China; rail service suspended

A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.9 struck China's remote northwestern Qinghai province on Saturday, authorities said. The earthquake has forced the suspension of high-speed rail service because of damage to several tunnels, they added. The government and the China Earthquake Administration dispatched a team to Qinghai to help investigate the situation and resettle any affected residents.
