According to Harvard Health, sleeping on the side or back are best positions for neck pain. "If you sleep on your back, choose rounded pillow to support natural curve of neck, with a flatter pillow cushioning the head," Harvard Health said. Use a pillow that is higher under the neck than the head while sleeping on the side, it added.
