A dog was 1st living being to be sent into orbit

The Soviet Union launched the first living being, Laika, a dog, into earth's orbit in 1957. The dog could not survive the mission, as technology had not been developed for the return. Subsequently, Yuri Gagarin became the first human to orbit the earth in 1961, and Neil Armstrong the first to set foot on the moon on July 20, 1969.
