The runway of the Gibraltar Airport, which serves the British Overseas Territory, is intersected by a four-lane road. The road, connecting the territory to Spain, has to be closed for about 10 minutes every time a plane lands or takes off. The airport was constructed during World War II when Gibraltar served as a naval base.
