A laughing epidemic once lasted for 18 months in Africa

In a boarding school in the African region of Tanganyika, which is now known as Tanzania, girls began to abruptly laugh and cry in 1962. Without a cure to the laughing epidemic for a month and a half, the school was shut. The mass hysteria later spread to about 1,000 people in various schools, reportedly lasting up to 18 months.
