Germany set to get first right-wing party in power since WWII

The far-right AfD secured a historic victory in Germany’s Saxony-Anhalt election, winning around 44% of the vote. The result dealt a major blow to Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s centre-right CDU. No far-right party has controlled a German state since World War II. AfD leader Ulrich Siegmund called the result “sensational” and said voters had given the party a mandate to govern.
