Amazon warns software engineers against excessive AI token usage

Amazon has warned software engineers against "token maxxing", the excessive use of AI tools and tokens to complete coding tasks. In an internal memo circulated in September and made public on Tuesday, Amazon said measuring AI adoption through token usage, tool adoption rates and code changes is "deeply flawed". It warned these metrics could increase costs and add unnecessary complexity.
