Ancient pig-like animal shows start of mammalian brain evolution

Researchers have discovered fossils of Gordonia, an ancient pig-like protomammal from 250 million years ago, showing early mammalian brain evolution. Gordonia's brain, though more reptilian in shape, was relatively large for its body size, indicating early signs of intelligence. "It was a smart creature for its time," said University of Edinburgh palaeontologist Steve Brusatte.
