Ancient space rock creates bright green fireball over New Zealand

On August 30, a 4.6-billion-year-old space rock from the asteroid belt created a bright green fireball over New Zealand. Travelling at 61,200 kilometres per hour, the meteor's vapourising magnesium caused its striking hue. The ancient rock put on a 10-second spectacle before completely burning up 30 kilometres above the ocean, leaving no fragments behind.
