Andaman islands were once ruled by the Japanese

The Andaman and Nicobar islands are the only part of India that were once ruled by a non-European nation, Japan. The islands were earlier used by the British authorities as a penal colony for Indian and African political prisoners, until 1938. They were occupied by the Japanese forces on March 23,1942 for three years.
