Germany's former chancellor Angela Merkel received the country's highest honour in a ceremony in Berlin on Monday. The Grand Cross award was handed to her by President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. Merkel, Germany's first female Chancellor, led the country from 2005 to 2021. Notably, only two former chancellors of Germany have received the Grand Cross award previously, Konrad Adenauer, and Helmut Kohl.
