Women's rights activist Annie Besant, who was also a socialist, theosophist and writer, was born on October 1, 1847. British-born Besant founded a weekly newspaper, New India, in 1914 wherein she called for India’s independence. She also established many educational institutions including Varanasi's Central Hindu School where the curriculum combined secular education and Hindu tenets.
