Arunachal Pradesh became the 24th state of India on February 20, 1987. Formerly a part of the North-East Frontier Agency and Assam, it was renamed as Arunachal Pradesh, meaning 'Land of the Rising Sun', in 1972 on being declared a union territory. Notably, China's claims on certain Indian border territories including Arunachal Pradesh led to the 1962 Sino-Indian War.
