ASI finds 16th-century relics at fort of Pepper Queen in Karnataka

Queen Chennabhairadevi, who ruled the Gersoppa region for 54 years, established Mirjan Fort as a key centre for pepper trade and a stronghold controlling the Arabian Sea, earning her the name of Pepper Queen. ASI has discovered Portuguese gold coins, cannonballs, Chinese ceramics, and clay tablets from the 16th-century fort. It housed a hidden treasure, later appropriated by the British.
