Assam's 96-year-old Sattriya maestro Haricharan Saikia was awarded the Padma Shri for his contributions to the classical dance and music form. Saikia spent over seven decades preserving the classical art form and introduced it to newer generations. Sattriya is one of India's eight classical dance forms which originated in Assam and Saikia still continues to train young students in it.
