Scientists on Monday announced that gold equalling the mass of the Earth was produced due to the collision of two neutron stars. Neutron stars are dense fuel-exhausted stars, long theorised as cosmic production sites for rare heavy elements. The event was confirmed due to light emission in form of high-energy gamma-ray bursts coupled with gravitational waves for the first time.
