The Atlas blue butterfly from Morocco and Algeria has the highest chromosome count of any animal, with 229 pairs. Unlike typical butterflies with ~24 pairs, its chromosomes split over time, reshaping its genome. Studying its genetics could reveal insights into evolution, species adaptation, and human cancer biology, while also aiding conservation of this endangered insect.
