Average age at which schoolchildren start picking up smoking is 13: Survey

AIIMS-Delhi survey found that schoolchildren are beginning drug, alcohol and smoking habits at an average age of 13, with some starting as early as 11. Substance use increased sharply in higher classes, with Classes XI-XII students twice as likely to report usage compared to Class VIII students. Average age of initiation for any substance was 12.9 years.
