The average time for issuing tax refunds climbed to 35 days for the fiscal year 2025-26 (FY26), marking a three-year high. Nearly 27 lakh income tax refund applications were delayed beyond 90 days, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) said. The surge in the time taken for refunds is due to a crackdown on fraudulent or incorrect tax deductions.
