Bacteria can ‘talk’ and are multilingual, says biologist

Bonnie Bassler, a biologist at Princeton University, said bacteria “talk” using chemical signals and are multilingual. She explained that a process called quorum sensing allows microbes to measure population size. Bacteria release and detect signals, and as numbers rise, their behaviour changes collectively, she said. Bassler added that anti-quorum sensing drugs can replace antibiotics in future.
