Shiv Sena leader Bal Thackeray began his career as a cartoonist in the Free Press Journal in Mumbai and also worked with the renowned artist RK Laxman. He used his cartoons and journal to campaign against the growing number of the non-Marathi people in Mumbai. Thackeray, who died on November 17, 2012, founded the political party Shiv Sena in 1966.
