Bangladesh President Md Abdul Hamid on Tuesday signed an ordinance approving the death penalty for rapists amid nationwide protests. On Monday, the Cabinet had approved an increase in the maximum punishment in rape cases to death from life imprisonment. According to a human rights group, nearly 1,000 rape cases were reported in Bangladesh between January and September.
