CJI DY Chandrachud has called the basic structure doctrine a North Star that guides interpreters of the Constitution. His statement came days after V-P Jagdeep Dhankhar said the 1973 Kesavananda Bharati case verdict that outlined the basic structure doctrine set a bad precedent. The judgement says Parliament can amend the Constitution but not change its basic structure or foundational principles.
