Bats in Northeast face threats, Meghalaya a key diversity hotspot

In Meghalaya and across the Northeast, bats face rising threats from mining, hunting and habitat loss, says the State of India’s Bats (2024–25) report released at Zoological Survey of India. Meghalaya hosts nearly half of India’s bat diversity, but cave ecosystems are under pressure, with experts warning of urgent conservation and research gaps.
