A study by AIIMS Jodhpur and International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease has recommended that the "beedi business should lose the status of a cottage industry and the associated regulation and taxation benefits it enjoys". This could help the government achieve a "manifold increase in revenue", the study said. It added that the measure could also decrease beedi's demand.
