Beluga whales swap partners to boost survival, study finds

A 13-year study of beluga whales in Alaska’s Bristol Bay showed that they don't follow monogamy or alpha-male dominance. Instead, both males and females swap partners over time, a system called polygynandry. Scientists said that this strategy reduces inbreeding, boosts genetic diversity and helps the small, isolated population survive harsh Arctic conditions.
