What are supershear earthquakes?

Supershear earthquakes are rare quakes that move faster than their own seismic shear waves, creating intense ground shaking similar to a sonic boom. This rapid rupture generates stronger, more destructive waves than normal quakes, as per researchers from the University of Southern California's Dornsife College. The March 2025 Myanmar 7.7-magnitude earthquake is believed to be a supershear event.
