Black fungus found in Chernobyl eats radiation for energy

At Chernobyl, scientists found a black fungus that, like plants in sunlight, absorbs radiation and transforms it into energy. Scientists also found that the fungus contains melanin which is also found in human skin. Melanin provides protection against ultraviolet radiation but in the case of this fungus, it converts gamma radiation into chemical energy.
