British forces burned the White House on August 24, 1814

British troops entered Washington DC and burned the White House on this day in 1814, during the War of 1812 between the United States and England. This came in retaliation to the US attack on the city of York in Ontario, Canada, in June 1812. British troops also destroyed the incomplete Capitol building and the House of Representatives.
