India's Border Security Force (BSF), the central armed police force of the country, was established on December 1, 1965. Before the establishment of the BSF, local police battalions of border states used to protect the country's international boundaries. With a strength of 186 battalions and 2.4 lakh personnel, the BSF is currently the world's largest border guarding force.
