Rasra MLA Umashankar Singh, Bahujan Samaj Party's (BSP) lone legislator in the 403-member Uttar Pradesh Assembly, passed away on Wednesday evening, aged 55, after a prolonged battle with cancer. Singh, a three-time MLA from Ballia's Rasra constituency, had been undergoing treatment in Delhi and abroad over the past two years. BSP chief Mayawati said Umashankar's death was "deeply saddening".
