Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday proposed taxing buyback proceeds of all types of shareholders as capital gains. To disincentivise misuse of tax arbitrage, promoters will also pay an additional buyback tax, she said. This will make the effective tax 22% for corporate promoters, while for non-corporate promoters, it will be 30%.
