Mike the Headless Chicken lived for 18 months after a farmer in 1945 axed his head but missed the jugular vein. For 18 months, Mike was fed milk and water, dropped directly into his oesophagus, before he died by choking on corn. It is believed that he survived as a part of his brain stem remained intact, allowing basic functions.
