China is escalating transnational repression by using sexually explicit deepfakes to harass exiled activists, Human Rights Watch (HRW) has said. Hong Kong dissidents Carmen Lau and Ted Hui were targeted abroad, while a similar 2024 case was traced to Chinese security agencies. HRW urges governments to investigate, condemn such acts, and support victims.
