Despite international criticism, Chinese eateries on Monday held the annual Yulin Dog Meat Festival. Eating dog meat in summers is traditional, restaurant owners in southern China claim. The Yulin government, however, distanced itself from the festival and announced new restrictions. As many as 10,000 dogs, many of them stolen pets, are slaughtered for the festival.
