Scientists from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Shenzhen University have developed the world's first coal-powered battery, which they say has zero-carbon emissions. The process uses fine coal powder, which undergoes electrochemical oxidation that directly generates electricity. The high-purity carbon dioxide generated by the reaction is captured and converted into valuable chemical feedstocks.
