In the early 19th century, Christiana Willes helped her brother John, a Kent cricketer, practice. Struggling with underarm bowling while wearing a hooped skirt, she adopted a round-arm style around 1807. Her skirts forced a higher arm action, which she found more effective. Through experimentation, she refined her technique, influencing the evolution of bowling in cricket.
