Chronic stress from poverty, discrimination, or poor living conditions can increase inflammation, blood pressure, and artery damage, raising the risk of heart disease. A review published in the American Journal of Preventive Cardiology shows that long-term stress, especially starting in childhood, may lead to heart attacks and strokes later in life.
