Recalling 1979's 'Tukaram vs State of Maharashtra' (Mathura rape case), CJI BR Gavai said SC "failed to protect dignity of the very person it was meant to safeguard." The court had acquitted two policemen accused of raping a tribal girl, ruling her "consent" was voluntary since there were no visible signs of resistance. CJI called it "moment of institutional embarrassment".
