Climate change weakening self-cleaning capability of lakes: Study

A study published in 'Nature Microbiology' found climate change is weakening the natural self-cleaning process of lakes where microorganisms remove nitrogen from water and convert it into gas. Researchers said the process is 50% more active in winter and with rising temperatures the winter phase could shorten by 27 days. The nitrogen-rich water could then flow into oceans through rivers.
