Coca-Cola with its first sale on May 8, 1886, was invented for medicinal purposes by US-based pharmacist John Pemberton, who marketed the drink as a "brain tonic" and "intellectual beverage." Pemberton used cocaine from the coca leaf and caffeine-rich extracts of the kola nut, giving the drink its name. Facing criticism, cocaine was removed from Coca-Cola's recipe in early 1900s.
