British chemist Stewart Adams, who discovered that painkiller ibuprofen worked when he cured his own hangover has died aged 95, his family said. Dr Adams studied pharmacy at the University of Nottingham before joining Boots Pure Drug Company in 1952. His team trialled various compounds over the next 10 years, before discovering 2-(4-isobutylphenyl) propionic acid, licensed in 1969 as ibuprofen.
