Crop switching in rice dominated areas of North India can not only reduce groundwater depletion, but also improve food and nutritional security while ensuring profits for farmers, finds a recent analysis. However, it is more effective in the regions that are extensively irrigated, dominated by rice, and groundwater pumping happens through deep tube wells.
