A study spanning more than three decades shows that one in five Indian girls marry below the legal age—i.e 18. The rate for boys is one in six. Overall rate of child marriage for girls has declined from 49% in 1993 to 22% in 2021. The rates are highest in Bihar, Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra.
