Decline in vulture population in India led to 5,00,000 human deaths: Study

A massive decline in the population of Indian vultures led to deaths of around 5,00,000 humans between 2000-2005, according to a study. The scavenging birds, considered nature's sanitation service, play an important role by removing dead animals that contain bacteria and pathogens. The collapse in their population led to an uptick in human deaths due to the spread of diseases.
